Abu: Open-Source Desktop Office AI That Reads Files, Runs Commands, and Writes Docs from One Prompt

You want one sentence on your own PC to tidy files, run commands, and write docx / xlsx / pptx — without handing the whole workflow to a closed-source cloud agent. Look at open-source Abu. Repo PM-Shawn/Abu-Cowork, site abuwork.com, Chinese README README.zh-CN.md. Positioning is close to Claude Code’s Cowork style: you describe the outcome; it plans and executes on your machine. Researched October 29, 2026.

One prompt to assign work; files land on your machine

README and site put it plainly: describe the need in natural language; Abu breaks it into steps — read local files, run commands, write reports, open a browser or drive desktop apps when needed; deliverables land in the workspace you choose. High-risk actions (delete, overwrite, send, install) can use plan mode: it drafts a step plan first; you click confirm before it runs. When it needs your call, option cards pop up. Multi-agent background parallel (up to 5), scheduled Cron, file / Webhook / IM triggers, and Feishu / DingTalk / WeCom / Slack bots live in the same client.

About 29 built-in skills (PDF / PPTX / DOCX / Excel, front-end and canvas design, Mermaid, deep research, and more); supports self-evolving Skills and MCP connectors. Three permission tiers: request approval / approve for me / fully autonomous; API keys encrypted on device (Windows DPAPI / macOS AES-GCM). Official note: OS-level sandbox is mainly on macOS; on Windows, shell isolation is more advisory — do not treat it as a hard security boundary.

OpenBMB-ecosystem agent workspace with Office Skills PilotDeck 2.0

Who it is for (and caveats)

Good fit: want an auditable open-source desktop agent; already have DeepSeek / Claude keys or local Ollama; office automation (tidy desktop, extract tables, weekly PPT) where “one sentence delivers files.”

Watch: still fast-moving 0.6x when checked; Windows installer not Authenticode-signed yet — SmartScreen may ask “Run anyway”; start computer control and shell permissions at “request approval”; IM / scheduled jobs need Abu running and the machine not asleep. Enterprise vs open-source boundaries follow the site and repo.

Download: GitHub Releases (Abu-*-mac-arm64.dmg / mac-x64.dmg / windows-x64-setup.exe). Version and stars follow the October 29, 2026 check.
