When you are coding or reading docs, the highest-frequency Mac gesture is often a blind switch: hold ⌘, tap Tab. One WeChat ping later, the next blind tap may bounce you straight back to WeChat — the most recently used (MRU) order just got scrambled. AbcTab (official site) is a native macOS app switcher: jump by first letter / pinyin, expand multi-window lists, and in v1.3.0 a ping-pong lock pins two apps (or windows) as a pair so one blind ⌘-Tab only flips between those targets. Researched November 7, 2026.

What it actually does
- First-letter jump: open the panel and press A–Z; Chinese app names use pinyin initials (e.g. WeChat → W, Feishu/Lark → F); same letter cycles by MRU (e.g. D: DeepSeek / Discord).
- Ping-pong mode (1.3): in the panel press
`(key above Tab) to lock the current app with the highlighted target; after lock, one ⌘-Tab always returns to the pair mate — a detour into WeChat mid-flight does not break it. You can also lock at window level (two windows of the same app). Press`again to unlock; closing a paired window clears the lock. Off by default — enable under Settings → Advanced. - Multi-window / Spaces: hover or ↓ expands windows of the same app; minimized windows can restore on switch.
- Quit from the panel: with a target selected, Delete sends a standard quit; the panel stays open so you can clear several apps (Pro).
- Install: download the Pro trial from the site (macOS 14+); grant Accessibility. Treat the site’s version history and pricing table as source of truth.

How it sits next to tools on this site
| You care more about… | Better fit |
|---|---|
| Windows snap back after unplugging an external monitor; brightness keys follow the cursor’s display | LayoutKeeper |
| Drag files onto a wheel for convert / edit / AirDrop | OpenShelf (EN pending) |
| Rewrite, translate, or dictate in any text field (local models OK) | Inklet |
| Alt+Space launcher + visual workflows (not open source) | Dashou (EN pending) |
| ⌘-Tab first-letter jump + ping-pong lock of two targets | AbcTab |
In short: LayoutKeeper / OpenShelf / Inklet cover layout, files, and writing; Dashou is a launcher. AbcTab is about the switcher itself — versus stock ⌘-Tab or Raycast / AltTab-class tools, the differentiators are English + pinyin initials and the 1.3 ping-pong lock, not another global search bar.
Boundaries (read before you download)
- Good fit: you live between two Mac battlefields (IDE ↔ browser, two terminal sessions) and hate WeChat-style interrupts scrambling MRU.
- Caveats: after 14 days Pro needs a paid unlock; free MAS build not listed yet, and multi-window jump / quick quit are Pro. Accessibility only, but still verify notarization and system prompts yourself.
- Not a great fit: you need Windows / Linux; you are fine with the stock switcher and will not pay; or you mainly want a launcher / file tool rather than a switcher.
Bottom line
AbcTab packs “find an app by letter” and “lock two targets into a ping-pong pair” into one native switcher. If you already use LayoutKeeper for external displays or OpenShelf for drag-to-convert, AbcTab fills in ⌘-Tab muscle memory. Download and pricing: official site; discussion: V2EX #1255049.
