Documents, spreadsheets, slides, PDFs — every file type opens another window? Weave Office (GitHub) is an open-source desktop office suite written in Rust: one window, one shared tab strip for Word-like docs, spreadsheets, presentations, PDFs, Markdown, code, and rich text. The same binary is also a CLI, so an AI agent can read and write files by path and get JSON back without popping a GUI. The project is still marked in development — do not treat it as a drop-in Microsoft Office replacement. Researched November 6, 2026.

What it actually does
- One tab strip for mixed files: contracts, quote sheets, pitch decks, invoice PDFs, and notes can sit side by side; switching away and back tries to keep cursor, selection, scroll, zoom, undo, and unsaved work.
- Wide format surface: opens docx / xlsx / pptx / pdf / md plus many code and text types; New panels are grouped into Office / text-web / code-data.
- Four editors, one host: shared ribbon, fonts, autosave and crash recovery, native open/save dialogs; split view supported.
- Agent-friendly CLI: when the first argument is a verb, no window opens — e.g.
weave-office set quote.xlsx /Sheet1/B2 value=1280,export,batch;--jsonuses a common envelope. See docs/cli.md. - Install: grab the matching arch from Releases; on macOS drag into Applications; on Windows the default is a per-user install (Release claims no admin). Verify SHA-256 yourself.

How it sits next to tools on this site
| You care more about… | Better fit |
|---|---|
| AI-assisted office that opens and saves real docx / xlsx / pptx | GenOffice |
| Separate Rust word / sheet / deck apps | WordCraft / GridCraft / DeckCraft |
| Pick a folder and tell an agent what to do with office files in plain language | PawWork (EN pending) |
| One window, multi-format tabs + same binary as Agent CLI | Weave Office |
In short: GenOffice leans product-style “AI office”; the Rust trio is three apps; PawWork is folder-level agents. Weave’s difference is multi-format tabs in one host, plus a CLI the same binary exposes to agents. Its engines openly credit WordCraft and upstreams — think “integration shell + CLI”, not a from-scratch Office rewrite.
Boundaries (read before you download)
- Good fit: you want fewer window switches while trying a Rust-integrated office; or you need a stable local path for agents to read/write office files (JSON / batch).
- Caveats: still early; complex layouts, IME, and advanced flows depend on acceptance notes. Release notes say native Windows launches are not fully verified yet; the minimum macOS version is also not fully verified on hardware.
- Not a great fit: production-grade Microsoft Office / WPS macros and complex templates, or anyone who needs a one-click Linux installer (build from source or wait).
Bottom line
Weave Office bundles “multi-format tabs in one strip” and an “agent-callable CLI” into one MIT app. If you already follow GenOffice or the Rust office trio, treat Weave as a unified entry and a scripting sandbox — not a reason to uninstall what you use today. Download only from official Releases and check SHA256SUMS.txt.
